Which window coverings keep heat inside?
On cold days, you want to keep as much warmth inside your home as possible. Good insulation and insulating glazing play an important role, but your window coverings can also contribute to a comfortable indoor climate. In this blog, we explain which window coverings are best suited to this purpose.

Short answer:
Which window coverings are best at keeping heat inside? Pleated blinds with a double-layer honeycomb fabric are a good choice. The air pockets in the fabric provide an extra insulating layer. Ideally, choose framed window coverings, as these fit closely against the window frame.
How do window coverings keep heat inside?
Heat can escape through windows. Even with well-insulated glazing, window coverings can therefore provide an extra insulating layer.
Air is trapped between the window and the window covering. This air acts as an additional buffer and helps keep heat inside. How well window coverings insulate mainly depends on the material, the fabric and how they are fitted.
Window coverings do not replace good home insulation or insulating glazing. They can, however, be an additional measure to help retain heat for longer and make your home more comfortable on cold days.
Which window coverings provide the best insulation?
Not all window coverings insulate equally well. Their insulating performance depends on factors such as the material, the chosen fabric and the way they are fitted.
Fabric window coverings
Fabric pleated blinds are a good choice for keeping heat inside. Double-layer pleated fabrics are particularly effective because their honeycomb structure traps air. This creates an extra insulating layer in front of the window. For this purpose, double-layer pleated blinds are therefore a better choice than aluminium or wooden blinds, for example.
Single-layer or double-layer pleated fabric
Fabric window coverings, such as pleated blinds, provide good insulation. However, the choice of fabric also makes a difference. At KeJe, we distinguish between four fabric categories: decorative (A fabric), non-transparent (B fabric), fully blackout (C fabric) and DUO (D fabric).
The double-layer C and D fabrics are particularly suitable for insulation. A double-layer pleated fabric has a honeycomb structure containing small air pockets. The still air in these pockets creates an extra insulating layer between the window and the room. This is why double-layer C and D fabrics insulate better than single-layer A and B fabrics. Would you like to combine insulation with complete blackout? Choose a C fabric. If you want to enjoy both insulation and natural light, a D fabric is a suitable choice.
Framed window coverings
The way window coverings are fitted also affects their insulating performance. Framed window coverings fit closely against the window frame. This leaves fewer gaps for air to flow through and helps preserve the insulating layer of air. Framed window coverings are therefore a good choice if insulation is important to you.
Which KeJe window coverings help keep heat inside?
Combining these features gives you three key points to consider: choose fabric window coverings, look for a double-layer honeycomb fabric and ensure a close fit against the window frame.
The KeJe range includes several solutions that can combine these features. The best choice depends on factors such as your window type and the functions you are looking for.
Splendid Pliss
Would you like window coverings without drilling or screwing into the window frame? Then Splendid Pliss is a suitable choice. The pleated blind sits in an aluminium frame that is easy to fit onto the window frame. You can operate the blind from the top down and from the bottom up, giving you control over how much light you let in and how much privacy you want.
Day 'n Night
Would you like to combine two different fabrics for the same window? Then Day 'n Night is a good choice. This system features two pleated fabrics in a single frame. For example, you can use a light-filtering fabric during the day and choose a blackout fabric in the evening. You can easily switch between the two fabrics, depending on how much light and privacy you want.
Fixed Window Plissé
The Fixed Window Plissé is particularly suitable for windows where a fixed installation on the window frame is preferred, such as roof windows and outward-opening windows. You can position the pleated blind wherever you like, giving you control over how much of the window you cover and how much daylight enters the room.
Supplente
Would you like to combine window coverings and insect protection in one system? Then Supplente is a suitable solution. Supplente combines a pleated blind with a pleated insect screen. This allows you to cover the window with the blind or ventilate your home while the screen keeps insects out. Supplente is suitable for roof windows and outward-opening windows, among others.
