How to maintain your screen door optimally

Mar 25, 2026

A screen door ensures that you can fully enjoy fresh air in your home, while keeping insects neatly out. Of course, you want your screen door to stay looking good and working smoothly, even after intensive use. Good maintenance plays an important role in this. Fortunately, maintaining a screen door is not complicated at all. The original KeJe pleated screen door is easy to maintain, durable and even washable, giving you years of pleasure. In this blog, we explain how to optimally maintain your screen door and thus extend its lifespan.

Why proper maintenance of your screen door is important

Regular maintenance of your screen door is important to extend its life, so you can enjoy a smoothly functioning door and an insect-free home for longer. Dust and dirt can accumulate in the mesh and frame over time, making the screen door less smooth to open and close. Regular maintenance of your screen door will keep it functioning optimally and preserve its beautiful appearance.

Daily and light maintenance of your screen door

Before a thorough cleaning is necessary, you can also do some things on a daily basis to ensure that your screen door lasts longer.

Daily use extends the lifespan

The very first thing you can do is to operate your screen door daily. Opening and closing your screen door daily has several benefits for the operation and lifespan of the product. The mechanism remains smooth, keeping the mesh, guides and closing mechanism in good alignment and preventing stiff running. Moreover, regular use helps reduce the chance of dirt and dust accumulating in the mesh or rails, so the door always slides easily. Also, the rope or chain system of the pleated screen door stays evenly stretched, preventing the mesh from drooping. Finally, you notice small problems, such as a loose string or damage, more quickly, allowing you to intervene in time and prevent bigger damage.

Light cleaning in normal use

In addition, you can easily maintain your screen door on a daily basis, without having to wash it every time. Thanks to a special production method, the fabrics are antistatic and therefore resistant to dust and dirt. In normal use, occasional brushing with a soft brush, cloth or feather duster is enough to keep the door tidy.

Thoroughly clean your screen door

If you do need to clean your screen door more thoroughly once in a while, there are a few things to keep in mind.

When washing is necessary

Thoroughly cleaning your screen door is especially necessary when you notice a lot of dirt, dust or insect remains in the mesh or guides. Also, if the door starts to run stiffly, the mesh is no longer nice and taut or you suffer from accumulations in the pleated folds, it is time for a thorough cleaning.

In general, we recommend thoroughly cleaning your screen door at least once a year, for example at the beginning or end of the insect season. With intensive use or if your screen door is in a dusty or damp environment, it may be necessary to do this more often.

Step by step thorough cleaning

Follow these steps to thoroughly clean your screen door in case of stubborn dirt:

Step 1: Fold the pleated fabric of the window blind all the way up or down.

Step 2: Fill a container, the size of your frame, with water at about 30°C and add a detergent suitable for delicate materials.

Step 3: Soak in the water for about 15 minutes.

Step 4: Remove from the water, unfold the fabric slightly up or down and shake it gently.

Step 5: Rinse the fabric well with clean water.

Step 6: Fold the product together into a package and let the water drip out of the fabric by lightly pressing the folds together. Let the product dry for about 12 hours while it is folded together. Open and close the product several times during the drying process to prevent the folds from sticking together.

What not to do when maintaining your screen door

To keep your screen door beautiful and functional, there are a few things to avoid.

  • Do not use harsh detergents or solvents, as they can damage the mesh or frame.
  • Do not scrub the fabric; this can deform the folds or tear the mesh.
  • In addition, avoid high temperatures such as hot water or direct sunlight during the drying process to avoid shrinking or deformation of the fabric.

By following these simple rules, your screen door will stay smooth, strong and neat for years to come.
